Yuna asked:

When we purchased our Sony VAIO desktop computer in November of 2003, we purchased a $200 extended service plan (warranty) for 3 years. Since then the hard drive in the computer has fried twice and the fan and motherboard has had to be replaced. We just got our computer back (after a 3 week delay because they had to ship it out to be fixed) and last night the fan went crazy and was extremely loud, and the computer is erroring like crazy.

This is the 4th time in 3 years that our computer has had nasty problems. I am glad we have had the warranty, but at this point it is just ridiculous! Each time we have to take the computer in it takes 3 weeks or more to get it fixed, we have to start fresh again because the hard drive crashed (we started backing it up after the 2nd crash).

We have full antivirus and anti spam/phishing protection, so it’s not like we’re putting ourselves in this situation over and over.
Our warranty expires in 4 days and I don’t want to get stuck with this problem after the warranty is expired because Best Buy couldn’t get the job done in 3 years time.

I’m so sick of going around in circles. What can we do?
To None: We have a desktop, not a laptop. Would you appreciate Best Buy’s answer being the they will “give you a break” on another model? Great, I have to pay Best Buy for another computer, when the one I have has never worked properly.

Denise

Goodbye asked:

Last night, my computer at home detected and found a virus. My firewall was on, and I ran my anti-virus, and all my other anti-spam, anti-this and that and removed everything they all found, however…there is an icon in the system tray that keeps flashing saying that it found “harmful spyware” and when I click on it, it goes to some “Malwiped” website and the website is reading as restricted. I have never seen this icon before I had this problem. Also, when I open up Internet Explorer, the first page it goes too is some weird “Internet Security” page, almost looks like a fake Windows page, cause of the colors. I checked to see what my homepage was, and it still says it is Yahoo. And there is also a toolbar in my Internet Explorer that I have never saw before either, and I can’t get rid of it! Will doing a system restore help this problem? I have all of my files already backed up. Any help or advice is appreciated, and if you want, send me a message if you’d like! Thanks a lot!
I did do an update on my anti-virus earlier that day…and yes…this thing is called “Spylocked”, the icon in the tray! that forum link is helping..I’m still reading away though!
Update: I checked out the forum thread the first user posted…right on the money with my problem. I followed the instructions, however the fake security toolbar in my browser didn’t go away..so I did a system restore. Thanks for all your answers! Helped a lot!

Marion
